We also thank the Almighty that our quakes were relatively gentle as compared to Chile’s.<br /> Moving on, I feel proud that Juddha Shumshere, my great grand father, was the one who invited this Marwari family, along with three others, into Nepal from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. What a legacy: a homegrown $ 1.4 billionaire cum philanthropist with 80 companies creating thousands of jobs in Nepal and abroad.<br /> No ordinary feat when you consider that, except India, no other South Asian nation can boast of a $ billionaire! It all started with one clothing shop opened in 1934. Asmi Shrestha won the title of Miss Nepal 2016 as she overcame other 18 contestants at the beauty pageant’s grand finale held in Kathmandu this evening.The pageant was organised by The Hidden Treasure at the DurbarMarg-based hotel de l’Annapurna.Evana Manandhar, Miss Nepal 2015, handed the crown to the new (21st) Miss Nepal Asmi Shrestha at thee grand finale.<br /> Shrestha will represent Nepal in the Miss World Contest this year. Visitors to South Luangwa National Park came upon a pride of female lions attacking the elephant near the Norman Carr Safaris Chinzombo Camp, and they caught the attack on camera. "Never have I seen anything like this," Innocent, a Norman Carr safari guide, wrote with the YouTube video, which has amassed nearly 200,000 views. "We were all so worried the elephant would be killed right before us. What a fighter," he said. The video shows the lions clawing at the elephant and even leaping onto its back as it tries to fend off and evade them despite being hugely outnumbered. Incredibly, the animal—which the tourists and safari guides dubbed Hercules—escapes unharmed, according to the Norman Carr Safaris website. To find out more about the behavior of both species, National Geographic spoke with Joyce Poole, co-founder of the nonprofit ElephantVoices and a National Geographic explorer. Have you ever seen anything like this before? We don't see it so much up in East Africa, [where I work]. Only once have I seen anything remotely like that. Usually elephants are very much in control when it comes to lions. So if they meet lions, they will see them off. What was the experience you had? A family group [was] feeding in some palm trees, and there was a year-old calf that was on the opposite side of the palm trees from the adults, just resting and feeding. Suddenly a lion approached and just pounced on this baby, who then screamed very loudly and the mother elephant immediately came out from behind the bush and chased off the lion and called in reinforcements. That's the only time I've seen it. I know for the most part, at least in East Africa, elephants are definitely the dominant of the species and will see off lions very easily. In Botswana I know of some prides specializing in elephants. I think it's kind of a culture among lions that can get started in certain areas. They tend to focus on these immature elephants. (Also see "'Unusual' Pictures: Lions vs. Hippo.") I wouldn't think they'd attack a full adult. And I don't think they'd try to attack an elephant if it was really integrated in the group. So it's likely that this one, even if the group was nearby, that somehow it was physically separated.

As many other people will tell you, however, motorcycles also leave their occupants open to the rain and cold, and can potentially tip over and scatter those occupants across the road. That’s where Lit Motors’ C-1 comes into the picture. It’s a proposed fully-enclosed two-passenger electric motorbike that uses an electronically-controlled gyroscopic stabilizing system to stay upright when stopped, or even when struck from the side in an accident. Lit Motors is based out of San Francisco, and is headed up by industrial/automotive designer Daniel Kim. The idea for the C-1 came to him after he had traveled around the world for a year, seeing the transportation challenges and innovations in developing nations. “I met thousands and thousands of people, and learned how cultures function and how people get around,” he told us. “It was an amazing experience. That’s basically what informed me, for the rest of my life.”Kim and his team have developed an operating model of the C-1’s flywheel-based stabilization system, along with a full-scale fiberglass mock-up of the vehicle itself. They are now working on a hand-built steel uni-bodied working prototype, which should reportedly be complete within about three months. Plans call for an initial run of production vehicles to be available at a price of about US$24,000 by late 2013, with that price going down to $16,000 once full production gets under way in 2014. Different versions of the C-1 will be available for different markets. The model aimed at First World countries will have an 8-10 kilowatt-hour battery pack, while a model intended for developing nations will be rated at about 4-6 kWh. The vehicle will incorporate electric hub motors in both wheels, at least one of those motors being a high-performance Remy HVH unit.
