I commenced reading it at 2200 hrs and was immediately horrified by the opening chapter — an account of the horrendous experience of his and his wife’s traumatic experience of being caught in the eye if the storm, so to speak:in the 8.8 Richter scale Chilean mega quake, in 2010, that lasted a full 2 minutes and 40 seconds! What was planned, perhaps, as a second honeymoon with an adventurous trip to the Antartica turned out to be a trip into the “void, despair and the end” to use his words.
It would be sheer lying if I did not admit to how queasy I was feeling reading about it: having experienced our own mega quake of 7.8 of April 2015 that lasted, relatively, a ‘mere’ 59 seconds.Yes, queasy because, in our case, the 7.5 aftershock after 7 days defied all theories since it was presumed that aftershocks get weaker and weaker and then,some day, dies out. We continue to record 4.0-5.3 even after 11 months! We also thank the Almighty that our quakes were relatively gentle as compared to Chile’s.
Moving on, I feel proud that Juddha Shumshere, my great grand father, was the one who invited this Marwari family, along with three others, into Nepal from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. What a legacy: a homegrown $ 1.4 billionaire cum philanthropist with 80 companies creating thousands of jobs in Nepal and abroad.
No ordinary feat when you consider that, except India, no other South Asian nation can boast of a $ billionaire! It all started with one clothing shop opened in 1934. This, as fate would have it, was set up by his grand father just before the most powerful earthquake in Nepal’s history.
